Hi!
I am an ERASMUS student, in Chemnitz, Saxony (East Germany) since the 3rd of September 2009. University where I study now is called Technische Universität Chemnitz, or shortly TUC.
My field is Informatik.
Not every University where you can study Technical Subjects receives the title TU.
You must have important results as institution. They have here, for example, The Fraunhofer Insitute for Maschinenbau (Building Tools (Machinery)) which produces a lot of new stuffs.
I will try to present you the academic life in here...
- in order to be registered you have to pay 116 Euro per Semester; you receive a magnetic card which you can use to enter every kind of laboratory you want, you can use it as Bus (and Tram) Semester Ticket, you pay what do you copy (xerox), what do you print, everything you have to buy from University (including books and food from Mensa), discounts everywhere... it is the proof you are a student...
- you have to gain 6 semesters * 30 credit points = 180 credit points
- you are allowed to gain this amount of credit points in 4 years also...
- there is the notion of Module; so you have to choose a Module of subjects, and you have to follow all the subjects in there
- there is no Group; you are alone... you just meet people who take the same subjects as you...
- teaching is in Deutsch, mainly
- some professors have ppts in English
- there are a lot of special Tutorials (Pro, Ober und Hauptseminar (Haupt = Main; Ober = Supra)); depending on the subject, you have either to prepare a designed topic and you need to write a paper and present it in 20 minutes, either you need to present a topic for 45 minutes (as I did already)
- those seminars are held mainly in English, because there are designed for PhD. foreign students who want to present their work
- it is good if you have a coordinator professor; here they are very powerful (they can help you a lot and they could also decide many things in order to satisfy your requests); they can give you a job also...
- here you have access in a lot of Laboratories; all you need is a username and a password, which you buy at the beginning of the semester; there are 2 kinds of laboratories: URZ and FRIZ; URZ are almost everywhere, including very near to the hostels (dormitories) and they are open from Mo-Fr 6-2 AM and Sat 6-22; FRIZ are only inside the main building of the University open Mo-Fr 10-18
- you have MSDNA center, where you can borrow or download Microsoft Software for free
- as an ERASMUS student you are considered special, and treated special... a lot of trips (almost free; I mean 2-3 euros for one day trips)
- rooms are single and double; there is one kitchen per floor...
- you have internet in your room, but you have a 10 Gb limit per day, and you do not download copyrighted software... (do not use torrents, do not share copyrighted software with anybody)
I hope I did not forget anything...
If you have any question, ask it in a reply...
